A Day in the LIfe of Nikki Turner...

Throwback

OMG- as you all know that I am the BIGGEST OLD SCHOOL fan ever!
So, T. Styles and I were suppose to go this party in DC and when we got there we decided that we were going to leave because it wasn’t what we thought it was going to be.

I called my one of my homeboys and asked him what was going on in DC. He told to come over to Club Love.  We did.

Once we got to the door- the man at the door was trying to give us fever- a whole other story that I will share another time.  But all I am going to say- is this guy could have been my inspiration for the scene in Riding Dirty on I95 with C- Note that changed his life.

But it felt so good once my homeboy came and got us and escorted straight to VIP where I was introduced to the ever so talented Slick Rick.

Slick Rick, Myself and Renee.

OK side bar- so let me say this before I go any further- as a consumer…..
sometimes when we listen’s to someone’s music or are wowed by someone’s talent- we begin to paint a picture of what we expect them to be- and once we meet them when we find out that they are not the way that we thought they would be.

HOWEVER this WASN’T the case with Slick Rick.

He was so humble, down to Earth and showed us SOOOOO much love! As we moved through the club to go to another VIP area- he stopped to talk to and take photos with his fans.  As I watched him interact with his fans- I begin to think that although hadn’t had an album out in over ten years, can still pack a club to its capacity and still have a line wrapped around the building to come in to see him.

As we chatted he was also excited to hear that I was indeed his long time friend and comrade, Dana Dane’s publisher.  For all you loyal Dana Dane followers- his book Numbers will be out soon on Nikki Turner Presents.  Yes I am very excited about that.  Dana is a wonderful person- maybe one day I will blog about working with him but right now let me get back to the club and Slick Rick.

The remainder of the night was basically all love, treating us like FAM as he rolled out the red carpet for us- having his people offer us drink, after drink- and ultimately bottles.  It was the ‘ROC’ for Toy (T.Styles) because I’m not a drinker but he made sure that I was provided with the finest bottled water that money could buy.  And my girl, Toy was nice as Ice when we left the club, which after stressing over deadlines and the issues in this crazy a$$ publishing world- she needed to unwind with a few good stiff drinks anyway.

All and all I thank my collage, T. Styles for being my partner in crime for the evening to the wee hours in the morning, my homeboy, Gee, for even inviting us- and coming to rescue us away from the ego- power driven door man and The MC Ricky Dee for having us to hang out with him and his dee jay and turning what we thought would an ordinary night into an extraordinary one!

NT over and out!

Oh yeah before I go-
PS. I forgot one little detail of night as it came to a close that I have to share with you.  As we were leaving the VIP area- the first person we saw was the ego tripping door man that had given us such a hard time earlier.  His whole attitude had totally changed- it had only been a couple of hours- and he had all of sudden he was now tipping his hat to us wanting to know if we “needed” anything.  (As a matter of fact- he’s the one that inspired the words of wisdom for this blog!)
